Electric sailing offers many cost advantages compared to a boat with a fuel engine: electricity is cheaper than fuel; an electrical system requires hardly any maintenance, and in cities you often pay a much lower amount in inland harbor dues. 

And more importantly: you save time with electric sailing! You no longer have to make a detour to a petrol station; you spend much less time on maintenance and the greater reliability of electric motors reduces the chance that your sailing day will fall into the water.

Running Cost

How long can I sail?

With the eFLOW and the accompanying battery pack you can sail for a day. The same factors that affect the operating time of a fuel boat apply to an electric boat: the conditions (waves, current, wind), hull design, load and riding style. If you sail against the wind and current with 10 guests, you will logically get less far than on a windless day alone through the city. With the included display you always keep an overview of your energy reserve and how long you can still sail.

Sailing Area

Currents and waves have a major influence on your range. The battery pack in your boat is comfortably sized, but use common sense 😉

Boot Design

The size, draft, hull shape and displacement of your boat all affect how long you can sail.

For non-planing boats, the maximum speed is equal to the so-called hull speed. That is the speed at which the wavelength of the bow wave is as long as the waterline length of your boat. The closer to that hull speed, the more energy you use (actually: waste) making waves. A more economical cruising speed is therefore slightly lower than the hull speed.

Weather, wind and temperature also influence your sailing day.

Load

Many guests mean a higher weight and a higher power consumption. The following applies: the larger your boat, the smaller this influence is. 

Sailing Style

If you sail at a constant low speed, you consume significantly less power than at alternating and / or high speed.

How does it work?

Electric sailing is much more reliable than sailing on fuel. This is because an electric drive system is simpler in design than a fuel system. You just need the eFLOW, a power pack, and you're good to go!

Drive

The eFLOW integrates all components of the electric drive, except for the battery pack. The compact high-efficiency electric motor contains an integrated thrust bearing and can be easily connected to any propeller shaft.

The motor is mounted in a flexible suspension and is therefore low-vibration. The eFLOW therefore does not rest on rubbers but is attached directly to the hull. This results in greater stiffness and therefore better efficiency. 

The eFLOW is pre-calibrated and tested for a reliable, error-free installation. 

Battery Pack

After thorough research, we have selected two types of battery technologies for non-planning pleasure craft, namely:

  • AGM

Both types each have advantages and disadvantages.

Lead acid

Our lead-acid battery packs are made up of batteries from the renowned American brand Trojan.
